Rhino Iguanas (Cyclura Conuta) Adoption Application

On Sunday April 27, 2025  Slither Inn Reptile Shop took in two rhino iguanas, aka “the tiny dinosaurs”,  transporting them from Anchorage back to Fairbanks. Their person had died and they had run out of places to go, so Slither Inn took them in officially as surrenders.

We are not a rescue, but given no one else had space for them I felt that I was equipped to figure out how to house them until I could find them a new home.

After three weeks of getting to know their needs, personalities, getting their previous vet records and ensuring they are generally healthy, t
hey are both now individually up for adoption.

Species: Rhino Iguana (Cyclura conuta)
Please note these animals can live up to 20 years or more, making them long-term companions.

Minimum requirements for approval of adoption:

  1. Proof of proper habitat: Photographic evidence of proper habitat prior to adoption. We require proof of a large enclosure (8ft x 4’ft x 5 ft min) before even considering an adoption application.
  2. Personal Reference: Vet reference or reference from reputable Alaska reptile community member (Jonathon’s Reptiles, etc.)
  3. Pet-only adoption, no breeding agreement: An agreement to keep the animal as pet-only; animal will not be used for breeding as genetics and parentage are unknown.
  4. Single iguana adoption only; these females do not cohabitate.
  5. An agreement to care for the animal’s lifetime or surrender back to Slither Inn Reptile Shop if for any
reason you cannot keep the animal.
  6. Adoption fee is $100.
Adoption fee covers the animal, two domes and stands, a CHE, a current basking bulb plus an extra brand new Zoo Med PowerSun UV Bulb 160 Watt mercury vapor bulb. Previous owner’s vet records for each animal are available as well.

Libby is a female and roughly 6 years old. Libby is less social than Peety, but very curious and loves to watch what is going on around her. Friendly towards humans, but does not like to be picked up. She will likely take more time to adapt to a new home than Peety will, but if you give her time and interact on her terms, I think you will find she is a wonderful tiny dinosaur.

She loves collards and dandelion greens as well as dandelion flowers. Also figs, blueberries, bananas.

As far as we know Libby has not laid any eggs yet.

Libby, Rhino Iguana (Cyclura Conuto)
Peety, Rhino Iguana (Cyclura Conuto)

Peety is a female and roughly 4 years old. Peety is very social, likes to climb up people and sit on their shoulder (mostly to get access to something she wants). She will follow me around (slowly, in tiny dinosaur tempo) and climb onto my lap and sometimes even my shoulder if I sit on the floor for her. She would make a great pet for someone that likes to interact with their animals daily.

She loves collards, and a bit of kale. Shredded carrots were recently offered and she ate them all up. Also figs, blueberries, bananas.

As far as we know Peety has not laid any eggs yet.

The application is 4 pages long and is a fillable pdf form. Please download it, fill it out, save it and email it back to us if you are interested in adopting one of these amazing creatures.

* Note: these animals are currently housed in Fairbanks, Alaska and only open to adopters in Alaska at this time.
