Rhino Iguanas (Cyclura Cornuta) Adoption Application
On Sunday April 27, 2025 Slither Inn Reptile Shop took in two rhino iguanas, aka “the tiny dinosaurs”, transporting them from Anchorage back to Fairbanks. Their person had died and they had run out of places to go, so Slither Inn took them in officially as surrenders.
We are not a rescue, but given no one else had space for them I felt that I was equipped to figure out how to house them until I could find them a new home.
After three weeks of getting to know their needs, personalities, getting their previous vet records and ensuring they are generally healthy, they are both now individually up for adoption.
One year to the date after these amazing creatures came to live with me, Peety has found her forever home!
Species: Rhino Iguana (Cyclura cornuta)
Please note these animals can live up to 20 years or more, making them long-term companions.
Minimum requirements for approval of adoption:
- Proof of proper habitat: Photographic evidence of proper habitat prior to adoption. We require proof of a large enclosure (8ft x 4’ft x 5 ft min) before even considering an adoption application.
- Personal Reference: Vet reference or reference from reputable Alaska reptile community member (Jonathon’s Reptiles, etc.)
- Pet-only adoption, no breeding agreement: An agreement to keep the animal as pet-only; animal will not be used for breeding as genetics and parentage are unknown.
- Single iguana adoption only; Libby was very aggressive towards Peety and therefore Libby should likely be kept as a sole pet and not cohabited with any other animals.
- An agreement to care for the animal’s lifetime or surrender back to Slither Inn Reptile Shop if for any reason you cannot keep the animal.
- Adoption fee is $100.
Adoption fee covers the animal, two domes and stands, a CHE, a current basking bulb. Previous owner’s vet records for each animal are available as well.
Libby, age 7, female
Libby is a female and roughly 7years old as of April 2026.
Libby is less social than Peety, but very curious and loves to watch what is going on around her. Friendly towards humans, but does not like to be picked up. She will likely take more time to adapt to a new home than Peety will, but if you give her time and interact on her terms, I think you will find she is a wonderful tiny dinosaur.
She can be sassy, fake charges and hisses a bit, but after a year of caring for her she has not bitten me.
She loves collards, arugula, lacinato kale and dandelion greens as well as dandelion flowers. Also figs, blueberries, bananas, grapes, yellow squash, zucchini and gets a small amount of tortoise chow ever other day.
One year update:
Libby had a lot of trouble with her reproduction cycle last year. I believe it was her first year having eggs, which could have something to do with the fact that she was probably kept improperly for the first few years of her life. She ended up at the vet multiple times so I am not sure she would be a good candidate for a breeding program. She also ended up so sick from the process she got a RI. She is over all that and healthy now, but I don’t think she should be bred.

The application is 4 pages long and is a fillable pdf form.
